MEME CORNER 😆
World Marathon Majors Corner
The 2025 Sydney Marathon is set to debut as the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major on August 31st, 2025 with several notable new features and updates planned for the event:
The race expects around 35,000 marathon runners on race day, aiming for a truly world-class, Majors-like atmosphere.
There will be small adjustments to the marathon course to make it more accessible and improve the overall flow for all runners.
The TCS Sydney Marathon Running Show presented by ASICS will have increased space to provide a Majors-standard expo experience.
On-course entertainment will be increased to attract more spectators, friends, and family.
The global live broadcast production will be expanded to enhance worldwide viewing reach.
The economic impact on Sydney is expected to rise substantially, benefiting local businesses.
The men’s elite field is notably strong, headlined by marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge and including many runners who have run under the Sydney course record, making it the most competitive marathon in Australia’s history.
TECH CORNER
What is all the hype about AVELO smart shoes? Avelo smart shoes are designed as advanced running trainers embedded with patented sensors to continuously measure impact forces, running form, and mechanical load during runs. These sensors do not require charging and provide data transmitted to a companion app that offers real-time audio feedback and post-run analysis aimed at improving performance and reducing injury risk.
Top 5 key features of Avelo smart shoes are:
Proprietary Sensor Technology (PRI): Miniature embedded sensors inside the midsole precisely measure impact, efficiency, and running form with every stride, lasting the shoe's lifetime without the need for charging
AI-Powered Coaching: The companion app uses AI to generate actionable insights including an Impact Score, Resiliency Score (guiding recovery and load management), Efficiency Score (running economy), and Form Radar (detecting form deviations that hint at fatigue or injury risk). It delivers personalized, real-time coaching both during and after runs
Durable and Lightweight Build: The shoe features a lightweight TPEE foam midsole with a PEBA propulsion plate, an 8 mm heel drop, and weighs about 8 ounces (men's size 9), combining comfort with performance
Personalized Adaptive Training: Based on the collected biomechanical metrics, the app provides tailored daily and weekly mileage targets, workout suggestions, and evolving training plans customized to the runner's form and resilience
Seamless Integration: Avelo syncs with popular wearables (like Apple Health, Garmin) and functions independently of a phone for recording runs, though a phone is needed for live coaching cues
Avelo smart shoes measure three key biomechanical metrics during runs:
Resiliency Score – This metric evaluates the cumulative mechanical stress on the runner’s body, guiding recovery and helping prevent overtraining or injury.
Efficiency Score – It assesses running economy and form, helping runners optimize their performance by improving how efficiently they run.
Form Radar – This detects deviations or changes in running mechanics that may indicate fatigue or an increased risk of injury, providing insights to maintain good form.
These metrics are derived from proprietary sensors embedded in the shoe's midsole that continuously measure impact forces, running form, and mechanical load without the need for charging. The collected data is analyzed by AI in the companion app, which provides real-time audio coaching and post-run feedback based on these metrics.
I recently sat down with Founder and CEO of Avelo, Royi Metser discussed in depth all about the World’s Smartest running shoes. Stay tuned for that conversation in Tech in 26.2 mini series on What Runs a Run podcast.

Bananas offer a wide range of benefits for runners and endurance athletes, making them a popular, effective, and practical choice before, during, and after training or competition. Here are the key advantages:
1. Rapid & Sustained Energy
Bananas are high in carbohydrates—both simple (glucose, fructose, sucrose) for quick energy and complex (starch) for sustained release—which helps fuel muscles throughout prolonged aerobic exercise.
Their low-to-medium glycemic index provides a steady stream of glucose, avoiding energy crashes and supporting performance during long runs or races.
2. Electrolyte Support: Potassium & Magnesium
They are rich in potassium, a crucial mineral that helps maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, supports nerve and muscle function, and is vital for preventing muscle cramps—a common issue among runners and endurance athletes.
Bananas also provide magnesium, supporting muscle renewal and bone health, which is essential during high-impact sports like running.
3. Easy Digestibility
Bananas are easily digestible and gentle on the stomach, making them ideal for consumption before exercise without risk of gastrointestinal discomfort.
Their natural packaging and texture allow for a convenient, mess-free snack even during events or training.
4. Enhanced Recovery
Research shows bananas reduce inflammation and oxidative stress post-exercise, leading to better muscle recovery compared to many commercial sports drinks.
The carbohydrate content helps replenish depleted glycogen stores, while vitamins C and B6 aid muscle repair and immune function.
5. Hydration and Anti-Cramp Benefits
Consuming bananas before, during, and after exercise helps maintain potassium levels lost through sweat, mitigating the risk of cramps and dehydration.
6. Mood and Cognitive Support
They contain tryptophan, which converts to serotonin, aiding in mood improvement and potentially combating feelings of fatigue or low motivation during or after endurance events.
7. Affordable, Accessible, and Versatile
Bananas are inexpensive, widely available, require no preparation, and can be easily included in pre-, intra-, and post-workout routines or combined with other foods (e.g., yogurt, nut butter) for enhanced nutritional value.
In summary:
Bananas are an all-in-one performance food: they offer quick and sustained fuel, supply critical electrolytes, aid muscle recovery, boost mood, and fend off cramps, all wrapped in a naturally convenient package. Their broad nutritional profile makes them a top recommended food for runners and anyone engaged in endurance activities
