NUTRITION & DIET CORNER

Have you wondered what you should be eating just after a race? The best foods to eat immediately after a race are:

Carbohydrates

  • Replenish depleted glycogen stores by consuming carb-rich foods like bananas, bagels, pretzels, energy bars, etc. within 30 minutes of finishing. Aim for 0.5-0.7 grams of carbs per pound (1-1.5 g/kg) of body weight.

Protein

  • Consume 15-25 grams of protein within 30 minutes to provide amino acids for muscle repair and recovery. Good options include Greek yogurt, chocolate milk, protein shakes, etc.

Fluids

  • Drink 16-24 oz of fluid per pound of weight lost during the race to rehydrate. Water, sports drinks, milk, and 100% fruit juices are all good choices.

The key is to consume a combination of carbs and protein in about a 3:1 ratio soon after finishing to optimize glycogen replenishment and muscle recovery. Some good post-race snack ideas:

  • Banana with peanut butter

  • Chocolate milk and an energy bar

  • Greek yogurt with granola and berries

  • Bagel with nut butter and a sports drink

Refueling properly within the first 30-60 minutes after a race maximizes your body's ability to recover and adapt from the strenuous effort
